We are boosting orthographic knowledge via guided self-discovery.
Our focus is on creating LEARNABLE moment: students exploring the whole written code, and asking them 'what's new for you?' They become engaged and interested in 'the code' - often for the first time!
The grapheme-to-phoneme and phoneme-to-grapheme correspondences NOT explicitly taught within SSP programmes are explored within meaningful texts, as well as other aspects of words not yet considered: this may related to vocabulary knowledge, orthography, etymology, morphology or simply the discrepancies between spoken and written language - eg accents, connected speech etc.
We are guiding students towards independent phonological recoding and 'self-teaching': their brains are then 'wired' for skilled reading and to identify if words 'look right' when writing independently.
It is a totally DIFFERENT approach with a tool (and library) that engages and includes all learners, and is suitable for all grades - and will not conflict - with your chosen synthetic phonics programme! *
*If children are struggling with phonics the intervention will help them as there is such a focus on phonemic awareness - so the intervention will help your 'at risk' children with phonics instruction.
